CamSam/Blitzer.de (free)

    1. What are the advantages of having the PLUS version of CamSam/Blitzer.de?

CamSam/Blitzer.de PLUS

  1. What is the cost of using CamSam/Blitzer.de PLUS?
  2. I don’t want to buy the app from an app store. Are there another possibilities to get the PLUS version?
  3. I have a new smartphone and would like to continue using the PLUS version I have already bought. How do I proceed?
  4. I forgot where I bought the app and/or which ID I used when I made the purchase of CamSam/Blitzer.de PLUS. How can I find out?
  5. I want to switch to an iPhone. Can I transfer CamSam/Blitzer.de PLUS onto my new phone?
  6. I have the PLUS version, but I don’t see the widget. What should I do?
  7. How can I make CamSam/ Blitzer.de PLUS start or stop automatically?
  8. Xiaomi: I cannot switch from widget to full screen mode. What do I do wrong?
    1. How does the app update its database?
The database for fixed speed cameras updates automatically every 7-10 days at app start if there is a stable internet connection. The database for mobile speedcams and dangers is being updated automatically every 5 minutes.
On the status information page, you can check when the last update was performed and how many dangers and speedcams your app database contains. In order to get there, please tap the map pin (reversed raindrop) bottom right and then the “i” that shows afterwards. The number of fixed speedcams should be at least 110.000 (as of Mar ’20).

    2. Why does the battery drain even though a charging device is connected?
We have tested several charging devices and have come across the phenomenon that not every charging device actually recharges the battery when apps are still running on the smartphone. We assume that inferior components in charging devices are responsible for this as the problem mainly occurred with cheap charging devices (including preinstalled charging trays in cars). Our tests show best results with original chargers. These recharge the smartphone battery effectively while CamSam/Blitzer.de is running. There are four triggers which, combined, can cause a relatively high power consumption:
      a) The display is illuminated constantly
      b) The GPS-receiver continuously locates your position
      c) The app persistently calculates the distance to nearby cameras in your driving direction
      d) Roughly every 5 minutes the app connects to our servers in order to retrieve the latest mobile camera and danger data. In addition, when using the map, CamSam/Blitzer.de (PLUS) loads map data
      e) There are apps running in the background, even though they are not being used in the foreground.
Every other app would encounter the same issue under the same circumstances.
      Thus we recommend to:
      a) Use a premium charging device
      b) Turn off the display once in a while and/or choose the Black Mode (Settings > General)
      c) Not to use too many apps at once and close unused apps in the background

    4. Why doesn’t the app show currently inactive mobile speedcam spots?
We have considered the implementation of inactive mobile cameras but have decided against it. One reason against the display of inactive spots is the enormous data traffic this would cause. The database of active mobile cameras is manageable and the database for fixed cameras contains approx. 110.000 spots which is still OK. However, there are 500.000 inactive mobile spots… and we’re still counting. You would hear a beep at each and every corner and consequently deactivate this feature anyways.
      go to top
    5. Why is the app missing some fixed speedcams?
Presumably, the database for fixed cameras did not load properly on your smartphone. This database should update automatically every 7-10 days. This update however only takes place under the condition that the internet connection is steady and non-disruptive during the update process. The quality of the internet connection varies locally. Our recommendation: If you have wifi at home, please occasionally start the app at home (in the mornings/prior to your drive) for the databases to load correctly. After approximately 10 days the data base for fixed cameras should be up-to-date. The number of fixed speedcams should be at least 110.000 (as of March ’20).

    6. How can I report a speedcam/danger without the app?
If you did not have the app at hand or if you noticed a speedcam danger too late, you can get in contact with our editorial staff. From Monday to Friday 8 AM till 7 PM you can reach them via WhatsApp chat: +49 170 6000 110.
For your report to be processed quickly, please give precise information such as exact location, max speed, driving direction etc. Please understand that we cannot answer WhatsApp calls.
You can also reach our editors using this free hotline: 08000 50 51 52.
Please use these numbers for danger reports only. In case of technical issues with our app please write an email to go to top
    7. Does the app alert me of Section Controls? What does the blinking orange „SC“ symbol mean?Of course CamSam (PLUS) will also alerts you of Section Controls. These record your average speed on a longer section. We show the usual danger sign for the beginning and the end of the section control. In addition to these you’ll see a blinking SC in the upper right corner. It will be blinking for 60 seconds at the beginning and the end to signal that it’s not a usual speedcam.

    8. How can I report a fixed camera via the app?
The fixed camera locations are imported from our SCDB database. In addition, you can report a fixed camera in our app. Alternatively, you can report them via our website http://www.Blitzer.de and add the information that it is a fixed camera. Our editorial department will treat this report separately. You can also send us an e-mail with detailed information about the fixed camera (type, location, direction etc.) to SCDB.info via gps@scdb.info or the report form
      go to top
    9. Why are there false reports? How are these locations deleted?
The deletion/deactivation of active mobile cameras on our website works as follows:
      a) reports made by users/via website/hotline etc. deactivate automatically after 3hrs
      b) the editorial staff can delete the reports manually if there is a concrete reason
      c) app reports via the app are deleted automatically after 3hrs max.

    10. I want to hear the warnings on my radio loudspeakers. What to do?
In the PLUS version of CamSam/Blitzer.de, you can redirect the audio alerts from the device speaker onto your car radio. This way, you can hear loud warnings while listening to the radio. In order to establish a connection from smartphone to the audio system, the app simulates a call from smartphone to audio system. You will see a call on the display for the duration of the warning, either from your own or another number.
If you want to enable this feature, please go to Settings > Audio > Audio output and select „Bluetooth HFP“. You can test this setting after aving connected your smartphone with the audio system via Bluetooth and pressing the sound check button in the settings > Audio.
      go to top
    11. What do the Bluetooth Profiles HFP and A2DP entail?
Bluetooth as such is the wireless connection between two devices. A Bluetooth profile defines what can be exchanged via Bluetooth. In order for two Bluetooth devices to connect, they must share one protocol.
“HFP” is short for “Hands-Free Profile” and was developed for a communication between a hands-free system and a smartphone. This way, calls can be made using the hands-free system. The audio quality of the transmitted sound is similar to that of a call.
In our case, CamSam/ Blitzer.de PLUS can only use the loudspeakers of the audio system in your car using the HFP Bluetooth profile and simulating a call from the smartphone to the audio system.
A2DP is short for Advanced Audio Distribution Profile and makes possible the transmission of a stereo audio signal. The sound is thus very good than via HFP.
We can only use this profile with our app if a media connection from the smartphone to the audio system is already active. If you play music via Bluetooth from your smartphone, we can also use this audio channel. CamSam/ Blitzer.de PLUS then ducks the volume of the music for the duration of the audio warning.
    12. What does the feature „seen (thumb up)/not seen (thumb down)” entail?
You can give us feedback, immediately after you’ve passed a mobile camera spot, if you’ve seen the camera or not. Your feedback helps us in finding false reports and inactive camera spots and deleting them from our system. If a report receives a certain amount of poor feedback (predefined quotient) it will be deleted from our system, so subsequent users won’t get this report anymore. You should be aware of the fact, though, that mobile camera spots might be located on the opposing traffic lane! If in doubt, it is better not to give a feedback at all.

    13. I’ve spotted and reported a speedcam trailer but my report vanished after a while.
This is what a semi-fixed speedcam, in this case an Enforcement Trailer, can look like in Germany.
      Teilstationärer Anhänger
The particularity of a semi-fixed speedcam is that it stays in one location for up to a few weeks. To ensure that we process your report correctly, please report this speedcam type like you would report a fixed speedcam.
      go to top
    14. Direction-dependent alerts for mobile cameras?
Currently, only for fixed cameras direction-dependent alerts are given. In the case of mobile cameras it is safer and more effective to have more reports. For one thing, the reporting during driving should be as easy and quick as possible (too many settings would be counterproductive). For another, errors could occur if users accidentally gave us the wrong direction or did not notice that there were cameras located on both sides of the road).
      go to top
    15. What does the number at the bottom of the app tell me?
In almost all versions of CamSam/Blitzer.de a number of users is shown. The first number shows the number of active users that are currently using the app (at a given point). By tapping on this number the display changes to the number of users in your surrounding area. This surrounding area is defined as a circular radius with a diameter of 50 km or a radius of 25 km (from your current position). This value has an informative character and cannot be changed by the user.

    16. Will the app also work abroad?

CamSam/Blitzer.de will work anywhere you go and the database of fixed speedcams, particulary in Europe, is always up-to-date. This database is already included at the app installation. For the use abroad, we recommend you to:
      a) Open the app with wifi before you start journey so the database of fixed speedcams is up-to-date.
      b) Ideally you should use an internet connection (mobile data) while on tour so the database containing mobile speedcams and dangers can be updated every 5 minutes. If you’re only offline, you will of course still be warned but only of the mobile dangers that were loaded the last time you were online. Please note that the community in Germany is the largest. Thus, there will be more reports and warnings of mobile dangers than in other countries.
      go to top
    17. How much data volume does the app consume?
We recommend you to use the CamSam/Blitzer.de apps with a data flatrate. Unfortunately, we cannot make an accurate estimation of the data consumption by the app as it is strongly dependent on the number of speedcams and dangers in the system, the usage of the map data with regards to the distance covered. However, you can reduce your data consumption by deactivating the option „Online mode active“ under Settings > General. Please note that this setting will be saved once activated and the databases will, from that point on, not update anymore until you activate the option again. If the app is in offline mode you will be warned of the mobile speedcams and dangers that could be loaded the last time you were online and of course, all fixed speed cameras.
      go to top
    18. What can I do to increase the volume of audio alerts?
In all smartphones there are several volumes, that have to be adjusted independently from each other:
      1. The volume of the phone ringing;
      2. The volume of each app;
      3. The volume of media playback (audio/video).
While the app volume can be adjusted in the app settings, and the volume of the phone ring is irrelevant for the playback of an audio alert, the regulation of the media volume of the app is not that obvious.
Since all acoustic warning sounds are audio files, you need to adjust the media volume in addition to the app volume. You can do this while you hear the alerts. As the duration of these sounds is short, you better adjust the media volume while playing back music in a music player app. The volume set for media playback will be used by CamSam/Blitzer.de as well.

    19. Which alert symbols might appear?
Below you’ll find a short overview of symbols that might appear on your display while using the app. In each case, the symbol inside the circle or triangle is crucial; variations – depending on the operating system and types (e.g. mobile and fixed) – are possible.

    20. Reported blue column but it doesn’t show up in the app?
A blue column like the one below is a toll collect station in Germany:
      LKW Mautsäule
It is not a speedcam! Since it does not pose a danger for drivers, the app will not warn you of it and there is no need to report it.

      Please do as follows:
      1) Delete the app from your Android smartphone.
      2) Switch off the smartphone and wait a few seconds
      3) Switch it back on.
      4) Download the app from the store you used before (with PLUS you must use the same ID if you don’t want to pay again!). Please do this with stable wifi.

    1. I have activated energy saving modes. How do these affect my app?
In order to work properly, our app needs access to your phone’s location services, the internet and the phone memory, among others. If you’ve restricted the access, in some cases it won’t work corretly. One of these restrictions might be the energy saving mode. This might prohibit the app from accessing the location services in the background. Please make sure you don’t have any restrictions active. In the following are examples of two different smartphones to show you how these settings that need be changed might be called. The exact names might vary from one phone to another. Our app should not be „optimized“ by your smartphone.

Ex. 1: Google Pixel 3a, Android 10: Go to Settings > Apps and notifications > Advanced > Special app access > Battery optimisation > Not optimised > All apps > Blitzer.de/CamSam (PLUS) > Don’t optimise

      manually

Ex. 2: Huawei P20 PRO, Android 9.0: Go to Settings > Battery > App launch > > CamSam/Blitzer.de PLUS should NOT be Managed automatically but „Manually“.

      special_access

Ex. 3: Huawei P20 PRO, Android 9.0: Also, go to Settings > Apps > Three dots > Special access > Battery optimization > All apps > Blitzer.de/CamSam PLUS > Don’t allow. Only this way you can make sure that the app isn’t negatively influenced by optimizations.

    2. Why does my display not deactivate after a warning?
With this option your display will be activated automatically shortly before a warning and deactivated again afterwards. For how long the display will remain active depends on the smartphone settings for when it should go to sleep. If you chose 10 mins, the display will only deactivate after 10 mins post warning. If you’re using a lock screen, you will be asked to unlock your screen – we cannot omit it. We recommend you to also activate the “App on lock screen” option, so the app will be placed on top of your lock screen.

    3. What functions do the phone buttons have (activate background mode)?
Android smartphones usually have three or four buttons. In general, by pressing the home button you return to the android surface without closing an app. The app continues running in the background. The back button closes an app if the ultimate/highest plane is reached. I.e. if you start CamSam/Blitzer.de and subsequently tap on the back-button, you’ll receive a confirmation pop up asking you about the closing of the app.

    4. My smartphone gets hot when I use the app. What can I do about it?
Apps like CamSam/Blitzer.de (PLUS) need parallel access to the GPS receiver and the internet; they permanently illuminate the display and calculate dangers. Plus, if there are even other apps actively running in the background, the smartphone cannot avoid getting hot. To protect your smartphone, we recommend you to:
      a) use a high-quality charging cable
      b) start the journey with a fullly charged battery
      c) switch off the display every now and then (background mode available only in PLUS!)
      d) make use of the offline mode
      e) close unused apps in the background
      f) not use too many CPU-intensive apps simultaneously
      g) activate the Black Mode (available only in PLUS!)

    6. Do I have the latest version of the app?
These are the latest app versions on Android (as of March ’20):
      CamSam: 3.5.1
      CamSam PLUS: 3.5.1
      Blitzer.de: 3.1.0
      Blitzer.de PLUS: 3.3.2
There are various ways to check which version you are currently using on your smartphone:
      1. Search for CamSam/Blitzer.de (PLUS) on the app store where you downloaded it for the first time, e.g. in the Play Store. If a more recent version is available, you will be informed about this by an „Update“ button.
      2. Check the status information inside CamSam/Blitzer.de (PLUS). The status information page can be found after pressing the map pin bottom right of the app and the subsequently following „i“.
      3. Go to the application manager in your smartphone settings and look for CamSam/Blitzer.de (PLUS). You will see the installed version at the top of the specifications page.
We recommend to always use the latest app version.

    8. How do I close CamSam/Blitzer.de (PLUS)?
You have the following options for closing the CamSam/Blitzer.de (PLUS) apps on Android:
      1. The app is in full screen mode: Press the „back“ button on your smartphone (this is the regular way of closing apps on Android smartphones). A prompt appears asking whether you really want to close the app. Confirm this.
      2. The app is widget mode (only PLUS!): Hold the widget with your finger until the prompt appears and confirm.
      3. The app is running invisibly in the background: bring it to the foreground and proceed as in
      step 1.
      4. Pull down the status bar of your smartphone and press the closing-X in the app’s notification bar.
Good to know: In the app settings under „General“ > „Behavior when closing“ you can deactivate the prompt for closing. Then the app will then close immediately without any prior confirmation. This will work in cases 1 and 2.

    9. Is CamSam/Blitzer.de compatible with Android Auto?
Android Auto offers the possibility to show and control contents of your Android smartphone on the communication system of your car. The list of compatible apps is made by Android and unfortunately, CamSam/Blitzer.de (PLUS) is not among them. However, you can use CamSam/Blitzer.de (PLUS) on your smartphone whilst using Android Auto. Even though the visual alerts cannot be shown on the display in your car they will still show on your smartphone. As for the acoustic warnings, you can hear them on the loudspeakers of your car. Every communication system is different but the two options Automatic and Device speaker found in Settings > Audio > Audio Output show the best results in our tests.

    10. What is the difference between CamSam (PLUS) and Blitzer.de (PLUS)?
The apps CamSam (PLUS) and Blitzer.de (PLUS) for Android are almost identical. The only noteworthy differences are their names and the availability. While Blitzer.de (PLUS) is a German product and thus only available in German speaking countries, CamSam is the international brand and thus available in some other countries around the world. There is no advantage or disadvantage of using either one of the apps.

    11. Android 10: Why should I grant the app the location access „always“?
The term „always“ used in Android 10 is slightly misleading. If you allow the app to access your location „always“, this doesn’t mean that it will access it even once the app has been closed. The permission to „always“ access your location only concerns the background mode. While other apps do not have a background mode, ours does. Meaning, if our app should run invisibly in background or in widget mode, it needs the location access „always“.

  1. I forgot where I bought the app and/or which ID I used when I made the purchase of CamSam/Blitzer.de PLUS. How can I find out?
    1) When making a purchase in an app store, a payment confirmation will be sent to you via email. You might try to find this email in your inbox and this way, you will see which store it was sent from and ID is the email the confirmation was sent to.
    2) If you still have the old smartphone, you can of course check in the stores and see which ID you are logged in with and also find out where you bought the app.
    3) Alternatively, you can check the payment overview of the app stores. Try to log in with several IDs (email addresses) and find the ID with which you made the purchase.

Here are a few links to common payment overview pages of some stores:

  2. I want to switch to an iPhone. Can I transfer CamSam/Blitzer.de PLUS onto my new phone?
Unfortunately there is no way to do this. The stores have rules and these say that the license for an app is tied to the app store in which you bought the app. This also applies to CamSam/Blitzer.de PLUS for Android and Blitzer.de PRO for iOS. It is thus impossible to transfer the license from one platform to another free of charge. However, the license doesn’t have a time limit. Should you return to Android, you will be able to download CamSam/Blitzer.de PLUS for free again.

  4. How can I make CamSam/ Blitzer.de PLUS start or stop automatically?
The app can start when you get in the car and stop when you leave it. This function requires an active Bluetooth connection inside the car and the activation of the feature in the app settings. To do this, please open the app menu and go to „Settings“ and then to „General“. Here you can find the „Automatic start“ option. Tap on it and in the window that opens, select at which Bluetooth connection the app should react. Please also check the „Automatic stop“ if you’d like the app to stop automatically, too. At last, confirm your selection by „Ok“. If you now close the app, it will start automatically the next time you get in the car.
In addition, you should make sure that the automatic start function is not restricted by app optimizations on your smartphone. This affects the global energy-saving mode of the smartphone and specific restrictions for individual apps. A few tips on this can be found here

  5. Xiaomi: I cannot switch from widget to full screen mode. What do I do wrong?
If you use a Xiaomi and the widget no longer switches to full-screen mode despite tapping twice, then our app lacks necessary authorization. To remove the restriction, please follow the examplary path below. The exact titels may vary slightly in different Xiaomi models or depending on the Android version. When in doubt, just give the app all requested permissions as it only asks you for the ones it needs necessarily.

    app_start

Go to Settings > Apps > Manage apps > Blitzer.de/CamSam PLUS > Other permissions > Display pop-up windows while running in the background > Accept
