  1. How much data volume does the app consume?
We recommend that you use the CamSam/Blitzer.de in combination with a data flatrate. Approximately every 5 minutes the app will load 50 kB (less at night). This is equates to ca. 600kB and 14MB per day (24hrs permanent usage of the app). The data volume consumption depends on the number of cameras in the database. The fixed camera database will automatically be updated every 7 days (*only if you start the app and the internet connection is steady). This consumes ca. 4MB.

  2. Why does the battery power decrease even when a charging device is connected?
We have tested several charging devices and have come across the phenomenon that not every charging device actually recharges the battery when apps are still running on the smartphone. We assume that inferior components are the reason for this as the problem mainly occurred with cheap charging devices (including preinstalled charging trays in cars). Our tests show best results with original chargers by Apple and Navigon. These recharge the smartphone battery effectively while CamSam/Blitzer.de is running. There are four triggers which, combined, cause a relatively high power consumption:
    a) The display is illuminated constantly
    b) The GPS-receiver continuously locates your position
    c) The app persistently calculates the distance to nearby cameras in your driving direction
    d) Roughly every 5 minutes the app connects to our website in order to retrieve the latest mobile camera data. In addition, CamSam/Blitzer.de PRO loads background map data (if they have not already been saved offline). Every other app would encounter the same problem under these circumstances.

  3. The app cannot determine my location (red satellite symbol). How do I adjust my location services (GPS-position)?
See No GPS, searching for satellites – Problems with location services

  4. Why doesn‘t the app show currently inactive mobile camera spots?
We have considered the implementation of inactive mobile cameras but have decided against it. The app will only show fixed and currently active mobile cameras. One reason against the display of inactive spots is the enormous data traffic this would cause. The database for active mobile cameras is manageable and the database for fixed cameras contains 60 000 spots which is still OK. However, there are 250 000 inactive mobile spots … and we’re still counting.

  5. Why doesn’t my app show all fixed cameras?
Presumably, the database for fixed cameras did not load properly on your phone. This database automatically updates every 5-7 days. This only happens under the condition that the internet connection is steady and non-disruptive during the update-process. The quality of the data network varies locally. Recommendation: If you have wireless LAN at home, please start the app occasionally at home (in the mornings/prior to your drive) for the databases to load correctly. After approximately 10 days the data base for fixed cameras should be complete.

  6. How can I report a fixed camera via the app?
The fixed camera locations are imported from our SCDB database. In addition, you can report a fixed camera in our app (except in the free version for iOS). Alternatively, you can report them via our website http://www.Blitzer.de and add the information that it is a fixed camera. Our editorial department will treat this report separately. You can also send us an e-mail with detailed information about the fixed camera (type, location, direction etc.) to SCDB.info via gps@scdb.info or the report form

  7. Why are there false reports? How are these locations deleted?
The deletion/deactivation of active mobile cameras on our website works as follows:
    a) reports made by users/via website/hotline etc. deactivate automatically after 3hrs
    b) the editorial staff can delete the reports manually if there is a concrete reason
    c) app reports via the app are deleted automatically after 3hrs max.
    go to top
  8. What does the feature „seen (thumb up)/not seen (thumb down)” entail?
You can give us feedback, immediately after you’ve passed a mobile camera spot, if you’ve seen the camera or not. Your feedback helps us in finding false reports and inactive camera spots and deleting them from our system. If a report receives a certain amount of poor feedback (predefined quotient) it will be deleted from our system, so subsequent users won’t get this report anymore. You should be aware of the fact, though, that mobile camera spots might be located on the opposing traffic lane! If in doubt, it is better not to give a feedback at all.

  9. Direction-dependent alerts for mobile cameras?
Currently, only for fixed cameras direction-dependent alerts are given. In the case of mobile cameras it is safer and more effective to have more reports. For one thing, the reporting during driving should be as easy and quick as possible (too many settings would be counterproductive). For another, errors could occur if users accidentally gave us the wrong direction or did not notice that there were cameras located on both sides of the road).

  10. What does the number of users mean?
In almost all versions of CamSam/Blitzer.de a number of users is shown. The first number shows the number of active users that are currently using the app (at a given point). By tapping on this number the display changes to the number of users in your surrounding area. This surrounding area is defined as a circular radius with a diameter of 50 km or a radius of 25 km (from your current position). This value has an informative character and cannot be changed by the user.

  11. Why don’t I get any acoustic warnings (Bluetooth active)?
Both smartphones/tablets with iOS and Android have implemented Bluetooth-protocols HFP (HandsFreeProfile), HSP (HeadSetProfile) as well as A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile). The first two profiles allow you to make phone calls via the Bluetooth connection; either via a hands-free device or a headset. The A2DP profile is responsible for the transmission of audio files.
All audio alerts that are given by the app are audio files. In order for them to be transmitted via Bluetooth, the device that needs to be connected (usually multimedia systems in cars) must have an implemented A2DP profile. Otherwise, the playback of audio files via Bluetooth connection is impossible. Multimedia systems that currently do not have implemented A2DP profiles are Audi MMI and BMW Navigation System Professional, among others. In these cases please force the audio output through the speakers of the smartphone/tablet. If this audio output is too quiet, please read the following section.
Note to iPhone users: Please make sure you have not accidentally activated the mute button on the side of the iPhone.

  12. What can I do to increase the volume of audio alerts?
In all smartphones there are several volumes, that have to be adjusted independently from each other:
    1. The volume of the phone ringing;
    2. The volume of each app;
    3. The volume of media playback (audio/video).
While the app volume can be adjusted in the app settings, and the volume of the phone ring is irrelevant for the playback of an audio alert, the regulation of the media volume of the app is not that obvious.
Since all acoustic warning sounds are audio files, you need to adjust the media volume in addition to the app volume. You can do this while you hear the alerts. As the duration of these sounds is short, you better adjust the media volume while playing back music in a music player app. The volume set for media playback will be used by CamSam/Blitzer.de as well.

  13. Why are some reported cameras not shown on the website?
The app and the website operate with two separate databases. Not all cameras that are in the app database will be displayed on the website http://www.blitzer.de. We have set some filters to minimize the number of false reports.
    go to top
  14. Why doesn’t the website open on my smartphone?
The website http://www.blitzer.de is not optimized for smartphones. Therefore you cannot open it with a smartphone browser. Please use our app for your smartphone to receive camera alerts or report them on the road.
If you don’t have an app-compatible smartphone, alternatively you can use our CamSam/Blitzer.de WEB App. Please open app.scdb.info in your smartphone browser. Note: You need a browser that supports HTML5 to run this web app!

  15. Is the app also available for Symbian /bada / Windows Mobile?
Symbian was an operating system that was only used by Nokia. Since the acquisition of Nokia’s smartphone division by Microsoft there haven’t been any smartphone releases for Symbian smartphones. The „Nokia Ovi Store“ that contained the CamSam/Blitzer.de app, among others, had closed. Following the app store closing there is no possibility to install new apps. Apps that have already been installed partially don’t work either due to expired licenses. We are not going to develop an app for bada as we are currently busy with other operating systems. In addition, we want to see what role bada will play on the smartphone market anyways. We won’t develop an app for Windows Mobile® 6.5 since we already have one for the subsequent operating system Windows Phone.

  20. iOS: Even though the volume is at max, the alerts are barely audible. What can I do?
Apart from the volume adjustment (see #12), for CamSam/Blitzer.de PRO the selection of the audio output is essential for an audible playback of alerts.
If you want the alerts to be given by the iPhone speakers, you must set the audio output to „Device speakers“. After tapping on the (Sound-)„Test“-button, an icon (AirPlay) appears.
    audio_output_air_play
If you tap on the icon you’ll be able to further finetune the audio output:
    a) „iPhone Speaker“ – the alerts will be given by the tall speakers at the bottom of the iPhone
    b) „iPhone“ – the alerts will be given by the small telephone speaker at the top of the iPhone, which are usually used for telephoning.
For the CamSam/Blitzer.de app, please use the iPhone Speakers (a).

  21. ANDROID: What functions do the phone buttons have (activate background mode)?
Android smartphones usually have three or four buttons. In general, by pressing the home button you return to the android surface without closing an app. The app continues running in the background. The back button closes an app if the ultimate/highest plane is reached. I.e. if you start CamSam/Blitzer.de and subsequently tap on the back-button, you’ll receive a confirmation pop up asking you about the closing of the app.

  22. ANDROID: What do the various changing colours of the CamSam/Blitzer.de icon in the status bar signify?

The CamSam/Blitzer.de Icon appears in the status bar after you’ve pressed the home-button of your smartphone and have made the app, thus, switch into the background (see previous question). When you’re using our app while on the road and everything’s fine, i.e. your GPS position cam be determined precisely and your internet connection is perfectly fine, the CamSam/Blitzer.de symbol will be green. When red, the app is trying to alert you of the fact that the GPS signal weak and your position cannot be determined accurately enough (for more, see „No GPS, searching for satellites – Problems with location services“ If your internet connection is insufficient, the icon will turn grey.

  23. ANDROID: Is CamSam/Blitzer.de compatible with Android Auto?
With Android Auto, several functions of the Android smartphone can be controlled using the communications system of your car. The compatibility list of apps is compiled by Android and, unfortunately, CamSam/Blitzer.de is not yet listed. However, CamSam/Blitzer.de still remains available to you, even during the usage of Android Auto – and here’s how: Please go to app-settings Sound > Audio output and choose the Bluetooth profile „Bluetooth A2DP“. Subsequently, press the sound-test button (while in the car) in order to make sure that the connection has successfully been established and the acoustic warnings are reliably given by the audio system.
